Cowboy Candy (Candied Jalapeños) – The Sweet and Spicy Treat You Need!
How to Make Cowboy Candy (Step-by-Step Instructions)
Step 1: Prepare the Jalapeños
- Put on gloves to protect your hands from the heat of the jalapeños.
- Wash the jalapeños thoroughly and slice them into uniform rings, discarding the stems.
Step 2: Make the Syrup
- In a large pot, combine sugar, apple cider vinegar, turmeric, celery seed, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper (if using).
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved.
- Reduce the heat and let the syrup simmer for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
Step 3: Cook the Jalapeños
- Add the sliced jalapeños to the pot and simmer them for about 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Using a slotted spoon, transfer the jalapeños to sterilized canning jars, packing them tightly.
Step 4: Add the Syrup
- Bring the remaining syrup back to a boil and let it simmer for 5 more minutes until it thickens slightly.
- Carefully pour the hot syrup over the jalapeño slices in the jars, ensuring they are fully covered.
Step 5: Seal & Store
- Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean, damp cloth.
- Place the lids on and screw the bands on fingertip tight.
- If storing long-term, process the jars in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes.
- Let the jars cool completely before storing.
Step 6: Cure the Jalapeños
- For the best flavor, let your Cowboy Candy sit for at least 2 weeks before opening. This allows the flavors to meld and develop.
